Cement trucks at 7A accompanied another full

day of crew work on the pillars of the third deck.

The manager of Baker Cement Co. indicated the

third deck will be the first floor of the building.

• Friday, 30 May, 2014

The union organizers hovered around the outside

of the site for about an hour, but by 8A they

were gone. Work continued unabated, finishing

the second deck and continuing the pillars for the

third deck.

Protest not Strike

Work started as usual with the site crew, however

by 7A the Rat was back along with about fifty

protesters for the union --  chanting much louder

than the construction noise, snarling Military

traffic as bad as construction interference, all

under the watchful control of half dozen police

cars and motorcycles. And like yesterday, after

troubling AM rush hour traffic, the union

protesters -- and RAT -- are gone by 10A, while

work on the walls and pillars for the third deck

continued on the site -- mostly behind the trees.

Visible was the placement and filing of three gang

forms for support pillars, most of the work in the

rain.

Strike - OUT

The union started setting up strike signs at 6A

and by 6:50A the strikers gathered outside the

Military Rd. gate and at the corner of Military and

Connecticut, while chanting started at 7A. The

Police cordoned off Military by 7:05A, but by

8:30A the Big Rat was being deflated, and by

8:45A the cement crew was back on site doing

their morning group exercises. Attached is the

union position paper (in pdf format) distributed to

the surrounding neighborhood. And work took

place behind the trees for the rest of the day,

except four flying port-a-potties at 11:45A.

- Video - Knee Deep in Cement

-The crew finished the rebar web and poured

cement front and center and by the late

afternoon, the crew was walking on the finished

second deck of the parking garage. Work

continued on the north-eastern wall, and a crew

team cleaned the sidewalk outside the fence on

Connecticut Ave.

Viewing Notes:

- The time-lapse is longer than usual (2:59 min)

because it was slowed to show more detail.

- In the AM video, put your hand over the part of

the screen showing the sun to shield your eyes

from the glare.
