• Saturday, September 21, 2013 - Rally

to Fight Cafritz Bulldozers

- YouTube Video

Chevy Chase residents took legal action and

scheduled demonstrations to block Jane and

Calvin Cafritz from moving ahead with a proposed

apartment complex that violates numerous city

and federal development rules. Note, the webcam

covers a little more than the middle third of the

Connecticut Ave. block between Military Rd. and

Kanawha St., so there were three times the

protestors, three times the noise, and three times

the message to the Cafritzes. (1:07 min)

- Finished denuding along the south side, Kanawha

St.; cleared vegetation and secured double fence.

- Denuded the north side of the property, Military

Rd.

- Removed all grass.

- Stop Work Order Notification posted last night at

9P on Military Rd. fence. "This was posted on the

fence on the Military Road side, on the edge of the

project. So if that side of the fence starts at the

corner of Military Road and Connecticut Avenue,

the sign was posted by the DC government at the

end of the fence on the Military Road side, where

Cafritz erected a fence and locked it with a steel

chain and lock. Among other things, the order

says they didn't have a permit to block that

entrance, erect a fence (at least on that specific

area) and lock the gate." FC

- The Connecticut Ave fence came down.

- The Connecticut Ave, 100 year old, stone wall

and steps were destroyed.

- The trees on the south west corner were all

felled and chipped.

- A new double-thick fence was installed on the

Connecticut and Kanawha sides.

☆ YouTube Video

Much of the activity is behind the street trees on

Connecticut Ave., but watch the chipper smoke

and grind in the middle of the screen, disposing of

hundreds of years of trees. Even though the

activity is partially obscured, watch the trees and

bushes thin and disappear at the right of the

screen, the southwest corner of the property,

Connecticut Ave. and Kanawha St. And 42

seconds into the video, a hundred-year-old, 10-

story, blue evergreen is ever gone. At 1:05

minutes, another evergreen far right is down.
